Hello Quantum Formalists,
The community survey has decided that before starting Module II (Lie Groups, Lie Algebras & Representations), we shall do a crash course on Group theory (8 lectures)! The idea is to introduce Group theory beyond what we quickly covered last year in the Foundation Module, which did not cover essential concepts such as; cosets, generators, orbits, stabilizers, etc. We'll also have a basic introduction to Representation theory and topological groups. Friday, February 25, was the chosen date by the majority who took the survey, and so it will be the official start date of the crash course.
Doing the Group theory crash course will be valuable to those planning to take Module II, particularly those interested in applied topics such as quantum computing (e.g. error correction). Also, please do not forget to review the Topology & Differential Geometry crash course because I expect you to know the basics of smooth manifolds before Module II starts! As a reminder, Lie Groups don't just carry the group structure; they also have an underlying smooth structure that plays a vital role in the theory.
Finally, due to my tight schedule this month, the extra 2 - 3 sessions on Differential Geometry covering some advanced concepts that we didn't cover in the crash course above (e.g. fibre bundles) will have to be in January/February before the Group theory crash course or possibly after in parallel with Module II!
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year in advance!:)
